Analysts continue to make predictions about mobile payments that don't just vary considerably - they literally range in orders of magnitude from one to the next. After years of talk, planning, and building, mobile payments are indeed increasingly making inroads in the payments world, but how deep will those inroads actually go? The simple truth is that nobody knows for sure. Consumers are notorious for saying one thing and then doing another, so accurately predicting the eventual penetration of mobile payments remains a hazardous task. This session will explore consumer data that describes preferences in payments types and propensities to adopt a mobile wallet, exploring some of the advantages - and roadblocks - that will impact the trajectory of mobile payments going forward.
The number of mobile card swiping devices for smartphones has increased in recent years, demonstrating growing enthusiasm in the industry for the potentially profitable small merchant market. While non-financial institutions like Square have dominated the headlines, more established payment companies also have plays in this space, heating up the competition. This panel will take a closer look at this merchant category, how the technology has been performing so far, and views from various providers in this space.
Payment-related technologies and ideas have dominated much of the recent FinTech startup boom, with mobile and social payments leading the way. Banks and some traditional payment companies have been on the sidelines waiting to see which of these technologies will rise to the top.
But are there investments that these companies can make now? Either in terms of equity or intellectual investments? What can more mature and established payment companies--banks in particular-- learn from startups in the mobile and social payments spaces and what companies are taking advantage or losing out?
A panel of seasoned experts from the venture and analyst communities discuss this, along with the perspective of a startup to provide insights on these and other related issues.
