THE CASE FOR CHANGE

Daniel Schulman Group President, Enterprise Growth, AMERICAN EXPRESS COMPANY

Throughout history, technology has radically transformed entire industries and the way in which we live every day. In the past few years alone, technology has overhauled the way we listen to music and watch films, who we listen to and who we influence, how we consume news and share “news” with others. The technological impact on payments will be just as revolutionary. In this session, industry-newcomer Dan Schulman, Group President, Enterprise Growth Group at American Express, will share his thoughts on why the payment industry must make significant cultural shifts if it wants to be part of the digital economy moving forward. Dan will discuss how technology is transforming the shopping experience and his vision to create an ecosystem that delivers an effortless, personalized and unified payments solution. He will also share his perspectives on the barriers the payments industry needs to break through to avoid disintermediation and deliver the next generation solutions that consumers want and need.

Not a traditional card industry player, Dan’s background is in telecommunications and fast-paced start-up environments. He was the founding CEO of Virgin Mobile USA and took the company from concept to becoming one of the nation’s top wireless carriers. The company was ultimately acquired by Sprint at the end of 2009. Before that he was the chief executive officer of priceline.com, where he established one of the most popular and recognized brands on the internet and in doing so redefined the online customer experience. He also has 18 years experience at AT&T, where he became the youngest member of the company’s senior executive team and was president of its $22 billion long distance division.
