State Bank of India Ltd. plans to deploy 50 solar-powered ATMs in the state of West Bengal in India to promote the use of alternative energy sources, an official from the Mumbai-based bank tells PaymentsSource.
“ATMs at 50 branches will run on solar power, while rest of the power requirement for the ATM network will come from normal sources,” he says.
The bank in March ordered 300 solar-powered ATMs from Vortex Engineering Pvt Ltd. (See story).
The remaining ATMs will be set up in other states, details of which will be disclosed later.
Vortex developed the ATMs in collaboration with IIT-Madras, a technology university in Mumbai.
The machines, which do not require air conditioning, consume less than 72 units of power per month, generating savings of 1,728 units per month, or 120,000 rupees, the company said earlier this year.
