US Airways Begins Accepting In-Flight Contactless Payments

PaymentsSource | Thursday, December 6, 2012

Passengers on US Airways flights can now purchase food and beverages with a tap of their credit card.

Phoenix, Ariz.-based US Airways says it has become one of the world’s first airlines to accept MasterCard PayPass-enabled cards and devices to make contactless payments for in-flight purchases.

The introduction of contactless payments on flights allows US Airways to speed up transaction times when serving passengers from the in-flight food and beverage carts, the airline announced Dec. 5.

GuestLogix, a Toronto-based provider of retail technology software to passenger-travel operators, provides the technology for US Airways to provide faster service for its MarketPlace onboard offerings, the airline stated in a press release.

Passengers can tap their PayPass-enabled MasterCard card or device on a US Airways’ PayPass-accepting reader to complete a transaction without use of a PIN or signature because of the low-value transactions, the airline stated.

The airline says the new system allows passengers to travel “virtually cash free,” eliminating the hassle of carrying cash and without having to fumble through their wallet or purse for exact change.
