VeriFone To Deploy Taxi Payment Terminals In South Africa

PaymentsSource | Friday, January 8, 2010

VeriFone Holdings Inc. announced yesterday it will deploy its taxi payment terminals in South Africa through an agreement with iMobilise Transportation Systems, according to the San Jose, Calif.-based point-of-sale terminal maker.

IMobilise intends to install the VeriFone systems, which accept credit, EMV and contactless cards, in 1,500 taxis in Johannesburg, Durban and Cape Town in time for the Federation Internationale de Football Association’s World Cup soccer tournament in June. The terminals also can display advertisements to consumers.

The company will begin deployments this spring.

“Consumers are increasingly taking advantage of electronic payment options in locations that offer unique media and marketing opportunities,” says a VeriFone spokesperson.

The South Africa deployment announcement is part of VeriFone’s larger push to expand payment-enabled media globally, states the spokesperson. VeriFone announced in December its plans to expand its taxicab payment strategy (see story). http://www.paymentssource.com/news/terminal-payment-verifone-marketing-taxicabs-3000199-1.html

VeriFone also this month acquired the Taxi Media business from Clear Channel Communicatons Inc.’s Clear Channel Outdoor Inc. in a deal that expands VeriFone’s taxi sales staff (see story). http://www.paymentssource.com/news/Verifone-holdings-clear-channel-outdoor-communications-taxi-3000225-1.html

VeriFone declined to disclose how many taxi payment systems it has deployed worldwide.
