AmBank Bhd. has become the first bank in Malaysia to deploy wireless ATMs, an official from the bank confirms to PaymentsSource.

“These ATMs use the global system for mobile communications, or GSM, protocol,” says the official. “We are moving all our ATMs away from fixed-lease lines toward secured wireless connectivity using wireless signals from telecom operators Celcom and DiGi.”

The wireless connection provides the same security features as fixed lines and increases installation speed, which enables the bank to deploy more ATMs within a shorter time period, according to the official.

“Additionally, wireless technology allows us to relocate ATMs to a more desirable high-traffic location from a low-traffic location when required and to places where leased-line infrastructure is bad,” says the official.

AmBank has 758 ATMs in Malaysia, of which 351 are installed in 7-Eleven Inc. outlets.
