American Express and Best Buy will allow consumers to make purchases on the retailer’s website using the reward points earned from their Amex spending.

New e-commerce technology lets Amex membership rewards participants use points for all or part of any online purchase from BestBuy.com, according to a July 30 news release. The system applies to orders sent out for delivery or held for in-store pickup.

When Amex cardholders enter their account number during checkout, their membership rewards point balance will appear along with the corresponding dollar amount. The consumer can then choose whether to apply some or all of those points toward the purchase.

Amex launched a Pay With Points feature in 2005 and integrated it with Amazon.com in 2010. Amazon.com supports a similar capability for customers using the JPMorgan Chase-issued Amazon.com credit card. Though the feature was enabled by Amazon.com's platform, it required JPMorgan Chase to upgrade its technology so that it could view reward points as a form of tender.
