Australia’s taxation authority in September announced plans to seek contacts with various third-party providers to support its e-commerce payments.
The Australian Tax Office hopes to sign three separate six-year contracts to provide online, credit card and telephone payment services for its customers, according to a local media report.
A combination of providers currently supports Australia’s e-commerce tax payments. Australia Post since 1991 handles over-the-counter tax payments; Commonwealth Bank Ltd since 2000 handles telephone and Internet payments and the Reserve Bank of Australia last year began handling its credit card payments.
The tax authority during its 2009-2010 fiscal year handled 9.4 million transactions via telephone and Internet. The authority received 85,572 credit card payments during a 16-month period through June 2010.
