The U.K.’s Barclaycard and VocaLink are joining forces to roll out Pay by Bank, an app enabling Barclaycard customers to make purchases on a mobile device without entering payment card details.
Pay by Bank leverages VocaLink’s Zapp technology to connect merchants to Barclaycard's payments gateway, subtracting funds from consumers’ bank accounts in near real time and using secure digital tokens to screen consumers’ account numbers from merchants, Barclaycard said in a Feb. 2 press release.
Barclaycard consumers opting to check out on an e-commerce website that supports Pay by App must sign in to the service using their usual Barclaycard credentials, which enables them to see their current bank balance before and after payment, according to the release.
“Mobile commerce is booming and with it brings demand from shoppers to pay quickly and securely,” said Paulette Rowe, managing director of Barclaycard Payment Solutions, in the release.
Barclaycard joins several other payment providers, financial institutions and merchants that have adopted the Pay by Bank app, added Rajiv Garodia, Pay by Bank’s managing director.
Barclaycard in December announced a partnership with China’s Alipay enabling shoppers to pay using their mobile devices, the bank also noted in the release.
