Priceline.com Wednesday introduced a cobranded Visa card issued by Barclaycard US that enables cardholders to use rewards points as soon as two days after earning them, including toward the credit card bill that includes the same that earned the points, Scott Young, Barclaycard general manager of partnerships, tells CardLine. This differs from many other reward programs, which either require cardholders to wait to earn certain levels of points or for monthly billing cycles to end before redemption, and most typically do not allow points to be used toward the same purchases for which they earned the points. Priceline and Barclays chose instant rewards because they were looking to do something different with their cobranded program, Young says. Cardholders can redeem points just like cash to pay off credit charges, Young says. Cardholders earn four points per dollar spent on priceline.com reservations. They also can choose one of three spend categories—utilities, groceries or home improvement—for which they can earn two points per dollar spent. All other purchases earn 1 point per dollar spent. A Kung-Fu fighting William Shatner, priceline.com's Priceline Negotiator spokesperson, is featured on the card. "Any shopkeeper will tremble in fear of you, a true Negotiator, when you flash that card," he said in a statement. "The Priceline Rewards Visa card delivers a nunchuck blow right to the solar plexus of high prices." Priceline says it has no plans to do any broadcast ads to promote the card but will do a direct mailing to an undisclosed number of consumers. The companies also have no plans to offer the card internationally, says Young.
