Barnes & Noble's Nook Media unit is partnering with mobile payment provider Fortumo to allow app developers to sell digital content in the Nook Store, which provides digital content for Nook tablets.

Through this partnership, Fortumo will provide developers with resources to implement in-app purchasing including a dashboard with real-time insights on revenue and analytics on how consumers are making purchases.

Fortumo's in-app purchasing technology uses a "pay" button on the mobile app to route payments through a mobile carrier—its partners include T-Mobile, Vodafone and AT&T. Carrier billing is considered an alternative to credit cards, and is used by other payment companies such as PayPal.

"In-app purchasing makes it possible for developers to ensure the customer only pays when they absolutely love the app. This has proven to be a compelling value proposition for customers and a very successful strategy for developers," said Rain Rannu, co-founder and CEO of Fortumo, in a release.

Barnes & Noble was also an early adopter of MasterCard's PayPass mobile wallet.
