BillMyParents, which provides a prepaid debit card with parental controls, announced a partnership with Autism Speaks, an autism science and advocacy organization.
The two are working together to promote financial education and independence for teens and families living with autism.
"One wonderful facet of Autism Speaks' mission is to provide an incredibly robust group of family services and resources to its extended community," said Joe Proto, a BillMyParents board member. "We are excited and honored to be working with them, and to be able to offer our BMP SpendSmart prepaid MasterCard as a tool to better equip families to address financial education and foster independence."
The BillMyParents card allows parents to set spending limits and to receive alerts every time the card is used. Parents can also remotely disable the card for security purposes.
Before BillMyParents launched its card, it provided an online alternative payment system that allowed teens to make e-commerce payments with parental approval. That product required merchants to add a BillMyParents option to their checkout page, whereas the prepaid card works with any merchant that accepts MasterCard payments.
BillMyParents transitioned to the card in 2010 to serve a broader audience than it was able to reach with its online payment system.
