Bob Evans, managing director of the Europe division of Total System Services Inc., passed away May 11 while on a hiking excursion in California with friends.

Evans joined the Atlanta-based payment processor in late 2000 as one of the first in the company to work out of the London office to develop its European processing business through TSYS International.

“He was instrumental in building the foundation of our European business, and his tenacity and determination helped TSYS to become one of the most respected payment companies in Europe,” TSYS spokesman Cyle Mims stated in an e-mail to media outlets.

“Bob's tireless energy, passion for the business and his loyalty to family, friends and TSYS will be sorely missed,” Mims adds.

Evans was responsible for all aspects of TSYS operations in Europe in his role as director and was front-and-center earlier this year when the company announced its certification to process transactions through the LINK ATM system in Europe.

As one of the founding members of the European operation, Evans first served as senior director of business expansion. In that role, he helped expand TSYS’ presence in Europe through sales, consulting and business development activities.

Just before the company celebrated its 10th anniversary of processing business in Europe, Evans was appointed as the director of the European operation.

In noting the milestone of 10 years of business in Europe, Gaylon Jowers Jr., president of TSYS International, called the May 2011 anniversary “a significant landmark” for TSYS, but called it the beginning of a next stage in growth “cemented by the recent appointment of Bob Evans as managing director.”

Evans spread that praise to his entire team in Europe, noting, “TSYS has come a long way in Europe in the past 10 years and every team member should be very proud of what we have achieved together.”

In looking forward to a strong future for TSYS, Evans added, “Europe remains a key market for growth and we will continue to develop our European footprint.”

Before joining TSYS, Evans led the DMR Consulting Cards Practice, where the services offered ranged from strategic consulting to large project delivery.

Previously with Lloyds TSB, Evans’ banking career included trade finance, treasury and cards, where he held operational roles in both issuing and acquiring while representing Lloyds on various industry boards.

Evans also served as a member of the advisory board at Commercial Cards and Payments Ltd.

“TSYS offers our deepest sympathies to his family and friends for their tragic loss,” Mims states on behalf of the company.

TSYS declined to provide additional details about the circumstances of Evan’s death.
