Jul. 23--CARTHAGE -- A Parkton man has been charged with the theft of an ATM that was pulled out of a Pinehurst convenience store with a pickup.
Joseph Zachary Fowler, 23, is one of three people who investigators say broke into Tommys Crown twice, said Detetctive Josh Craven of the Moore County Sheriff's Office.
The ATM was taken during a break-in reported June 20, Craven said.
"The broke in through the front glass door, wrapped a chain around the ATM and pulled it out with a truck," Craven said Wednesday.
The store owner didn't know how much money was in the machine and investigators have yet to find it, Craven said.
The trio is believed to have struck again Tuesday after someone broke into the store and stole beer, cigarettes and state lottery tickets, Craven said.
"We've recovered some of the tickets, about 300 tickets but there's still another plastic container missing," Craven said.
Damages to the business were estimated at several thousands of dollars, he said.
Fowler is the only person charged so far, Craven said.
Fowler is charged with two counts each of breaking and entering, larceny, possession of stolen property and one count of safecracking by removing safe.
Bail was set at $50,000.
