A new partnership between Western Union Co. and Carrefour Group will provide money transfer and bill pay services at the big-box retailer's stores in Argentina, the companies announced Wednesday. In addition, Western Union extended its existing relationship to provide money transfer services at Walmart Canada locations.
Western Union's services will be offered at 120 of the 439 Carrefour stores located throughout 22 of the 24 provinces in Argentina. Paris-based Carrefour Group operates 675 stores in Latin America. It operates nearly 10,000 locations in 33 countries overall.
Western Union is the first financial services provider to work with Carrefour in the South American country. The Englewood, Colo.-based company said the partnership complements its existing footprint in the Argentine market, which also includes Pago Facil, the collector and processor of public services cash payments that Western Union bought in 2006. Together, Western Union- and Pago Facil-branded services are offered across a network of 8,000 locations, including its own stores, as well as banks, national retail chains and independent agents' locations.
"The Carrefour agreement is part of our business strategy to expand and diversify our network to provide fast, reliable and convenient financial services to customers in Argentina," said Odilon Almeida, Western Union's president for the Americas, in a release Feb. 6.
In a separate announcement, Western Union and Walmart Canada announced a three-year extension to continue offering money transfer services at more than 330 Walmart stores. The partnership began in 2007, with Western Union first providing money transfer services at Walmart locations in Toronto and expanding in 2008 to include all locations of the big-box retailer's Mississauga, Ontario-based division, which at the time numbered 287 stores. Walmart Canada currently operates 373 discount store and larger "Supercentre" stores.
