JPMorgan Chase & Co. has teamed up with Dreamworks Animation’s “Megamind” movie to promote its Chase Freedom credit cards’ 5% cash back offer on movie tickets for the fourth quarter, Matt Kane, general manager of Chase Freedom, tells PaymentsSource. “We wanted to get the message out through very unique channels,” says Kane.

For the promotion, Chase gave more than 7,500 cardmembers tickets to 30 prescreening events for the film around the country. Fifty cardmembers walked the red carpet for the Hollywood premiere Oct. 30, where they met the star, Will Ferrell, and other celebrities such as teen pop sensation Justin Bieber. One cardmember won a chance to bring friends and family to an Imax Theatre showing of “Megamind.”

“You do these partnerships to get great brand exposure and they’re relevant to the card’s value proposition, but ultimately you have to deliver engaging customer experiences,” says Kane.

Chase also is running TV ads with the “Megamind” characters on prime time, early and late time slots, including ABC’s “No Ordinary Family,” “Jimmy Kimmel,’ and “Good Morning America.” The ads started in early October and will run through Nov. 7.

Chase Freedom cardholders earn 1% cash back on all purchases and 5% on selected categories each quarter. The overall deal stems from Chase’s relaunch earlier this year of the Chase Freedom card features, which for the fourth quarter also include 5% cash back on purchases at grocery and department stores. “We did a whole host of alternative media, including beach parties, music festivals and tie-ins with malls,” says Kane. Chase supported such special events for Chase Freedom cardholders.

Chase also is planning a Black Friday promotion at Tangier Outlets Malls across the U.S. to hand out “survival packs” to Chase Freedom cardholders, which include snacks, holiday shopping bags and other giveaways, says Kane.

The Chase Freedom program was initially launched in 2006.
