Chick-Fil-A has joined a growing number of quick-service franchises that are testing or deploying a mobile payment app for customers.

The fast-food chicken chain is currently piloting a mobile payment application in 20 locations in North Carolina, according to the Greensboro-based Triad Business Journal.

The application uses QR codes to enable mobile payments in the restaurant or a drive-through lane. After downloading the app and registering an account to load funds, the customer can tap the "pay" button on the phone's screen to display a QR code to be scanned at the register.

The Atlanta-based chain is determining if it can expand the mobile app to other markets later this year, the Business Journal reports.

McDonald's, Burger King and Wendy's are among the many restaurant chains developing and deploying mobile payment systems. McDonald's also helps promote the Isis mobile wallet.
