In a deal that could enhance shopping at one of China’s leading supermarket chains, China PnR Mobile Payments Solutions Pvt. Ltd. recently announced it would provide supermarket retailer Suning Tesco Inc. with mobile-payment services.

Under the agreement, China PnR will provide technology for a Suning Tesco mobile application to enable its customers to shop and make purchases using a smartphone, Juan Shen, China PnR strategic management manager, tells PaymentsSource.

The application allows customers to make a secure payment through their linked credit card and have their purchases delivered to their homes; China PnR backs up the transactions using advanced anti-phishing and anti-malware security software, Shen says.

To use the application, customers first must download the application to a smartphone, then link a credit card to it. Cardholders may use the app to browse Suning Tesco's products, then choose their purchases and pay for them using their China PnR account login and password.

Suning generated total sales of US$5.9 billion last year, and along with Jindong Mall, its smaller subsidiary, claims approximately a 50% market share in China's supermarket industry, the firm said in its 2011 annual report.

The number of consumers using mobile-payment services in China increased to 220 million last year, generating sales value of 5.24 billion yuan (US$830 million), according to China-based research firm Analysys International, which projects the total to rise to 23.51 billion yuan in 2013.
