Chinese rural laborers made more than 3.28 billion yuan (US$479.4 million) worth of transactions between 1 Jan. and 31 May with their UnionPay debit cards, up 57.7% from 2.08 billion yuan in the same period last year, according to a report from China UnionPay. The company defines rural laborers as individuals who work and live in cities and send funds back to family in their rural hometowns. "We work with commercial banks and credit cooperatives to provide debit card services for rural laborers, which enables them to deposit funds onto their cards and withdraw [the funds] at credit cooperatives in their hometowns," a China UnionPay spokesperson tells CardLine Global.  Approximately 60,000 credit co-operatives in 19 Chinese provinces feature UnionPay card cash-withdrawal services for rural laborers, the company says.
