Some 60% of consumers plan to hold steady on spending during the next month compared with the previous 30 days, while the rest plan to spend less, the results of an American Express Co. survey released this week suggest. For its inaugural American Express Spending & Saving Tracker, AmEx surveyed 2,032 U.S. adults online Aug. 28 to 30. Consumers' spending priorities shifted from what they recalled from a year ago, the survey found. Some 42% of respondents cited car maintenance as a high priority, while 5% said it was a high priority a year ago. Some 46% of consumers cited personal grooming as a high priority, while 18% said it was a high priority a year ago. Vacationing, which 25% of respondents said was a top priority a year ago, was as a top priority this year among only 7% of consumers, while dining, which 24% of respondents said was a top priority a year ago, is a top priority currently among just 8%. Asked what they would do with $500 of found money, 33%? of respondents said they would pay off their regular monthly bills, 26% would pay off credit card debt and 26% would save the money.
