Dollar General Corp. has begun offering Western Union general-purpose reloadable prepaid cards at its more than 10,000 stores in 40 states.
Under the agreement, which the discount retailer announced with The Western Union Co. July 19, Dollar General is offering the funds-transfer company's MoneyWise and cobranded Telemundo cards.
Both are usable anywhere debit MasterCard is accepted, including online and at ATMs, the companies said in a press release.
"The Western Union Telemundo card has been very successful among Hispanic consumers," Tim Sloane, director of the Prepaid Advisory Service at Mercator Advisory Group, said in the release. "The card combines two brands Hispanics trust: Western Union for financial services and Telemundo for information. Western Union seems to have found the recipe for success in the Hispanic market."
Consumers may load funds into the card accounts in person at participating Dollar General stores and at more than 45,000 other U.S. retail locations, including participating Western Union agent sites. They also may reload accounts through direct deposit of employer or government benefits, through their bank accounts online or by directing a Western Union funds transfer directly into the card account, the companies noted in the release.
