EBay Inc. named Bonnie Hammer, chairman of NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment, to its board as the 10th independent director, bringing in an executive with a background in consumer and social-media content.
Hammer, 64, becomes the second woman on the 12-person board of the San Jose, Calif.-based Internet marketplace. She's joining ahead of the planned spinoff of the company's PayPal payments unit this year, and decisions about which directors will be placed on which boards after the split will be determined later, eBay said today in a statement.
Hammer, who at NBCUniversal oversees 10 cable networks and two Hollywood studios, was named the most powerful woman in entertainment by the Hollywood Reporter last month, eBay said. She joined USA Network as a Universal Television programming executive in 1989 and has held several top positions at the company, including president of USA Network and Syfy channels. Before that, she developed and produced programs at several other cable and local TV channels.
"Bonnie has a phenomenal reputation in the industry and brings with her outstanding consumer understanding combined with strong digital and social expertise," eBay Chief Executive Officer John Donahoe said in the statement.
Hammer also serves on the board of IAC/InterActiveCorp.
