Online auction firm eBay Inc. said Thursday it had ceased its effort to make PayPal, the firm's payment site, the only online-payment option on the company's Australian Web site. EBay has "withdrawn its notification to the Australian Competition and Consumers Commission about removing other payment methods," the firm says in a statement. "Instead, eBay will continue to allow all existing payment methods on [the Australian site]." The commission last month delayed eBay's plan to mandate that buyers and sellers use PayPal for online payments. The commission said it was investigating whether the rule was anticompetitive. EBay wanted the rule to take effect on 17 June (CardLine Global, 16 June). The firm considers PayPal a safer payment method and has said that customers are less likely to dispute transactions routed through PayPal than through bank accounts.
