Facebook has deployed a feature called Donate that allows people to contribute directly to nonprofits through the social networking site.

The donate button will appear beside posts shared by non-profit organizations on their Facebook pages.  Followers click "donate now," chose the amount and enter payment information. They can also share the nonprofit's post with their friends, Facebook says in a news release.

Participating organizations at launch include Unicef, Oxfam, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, Boys & Girls Clubs, the Nature Conservancy, the ASPCA and Donors Choose, among others.

The new feature follows a Facebook partnership with the International Federation of Red Cross to allow people to donate directly to victims of Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines.

Facebook also supports a PayPal payments app, and WePay uses Facebook data to vet merchants.
