Fiserv Inc. is rolling out a service that enables credit card and other billers to communicate with customers entirely via e-mail, thereby eliminating the use of paper in the process, Patrick Howard, Fiserv director of marketing of online billing and payment biller solutions, tells CardLine. "While billing customers had the ability to go paperless [with monthly statements], there were certain things like rate-change notifications, new regulation or even annual statements that still had to be mailed to the customer," says Howard. "The e-Messaging Service takes all those nonbill documents and puts those into an e-mail." One of Fiserv's credit card-issuing clients requested the service, Howard says. The undisclosed issuer has been using the system for nearly five months and has generated an average of 130,000 customer e-mails per month, he says. Up to three other billers either are in the pilot phase or are in full production of the service, says Howard. Billers must use Brookfield, Wis.-based Fiserv's eBill distribution service to use the e-Messaging Service. More than 400 companies use Fiserv's billing services.
