Dutch digital security company Gemalto and Chungwa Telecom, a Taiwanese firm, plan to commercially launch Near Field Communication-based mobile payment system for the telco's subscribers.
The NFC services will enable Chungwa customers to make contactless payments using their phones. The telco is working with MasterCard and four Taiwanese banks, according to a Dec. 2 press release. The companies piloted the mobile payment system last year.
"Taiwan has a strong contactless infrastructure in place, with a long record of NFC trials," said Kuo-Feng Lin, mobile business group president at Chunghwa Telecom.
Contactless payments utilizing NFC received increased interest after the highly-publicized introduction of Apple Pay in the U.S. in late October.
