It would have to be a payments network's worst nightmare — shutting down because of technical problems during its merchants' busy Valentine's Day weekend.

Merchants using Global Payments UK suffered that stress when the network went down on Friday night and did not operate properly until Saturday night, DailyMail.com reported.

Global Payments UK cited problems with a terminal network services provider, the report stated. Customers unable to pay with cards were asked to use cash for gifts and meals.

Shops, restaurants, cafes and pubs in the London area reported losing thousands of dollars worth of business by not accepting card payments. Some store managers said loyal customers provided written card details, which the merchant loaded manually after Global Payments resolved the network issue.

Global Payment UK tried to advise merchants via Twitter during the outage, facing an onslaught of disgruntled business owners.
