Health and sports nutrition retailer GNC will deploy Near Field Communication payment readers at more than 3,100 retail locations in the U.S.
The hardware will help GNC support point of sale marketing and EMV-chip card payments. The health retailer is in the midst of a long-term initiative to improve its transaction capabilities, which includes accepting new forms of payments.
VeriFone has invested heavily in research and development to take advantage of the U.S. migration toward EMV cards and mobile wallet acceptance.
VeriFone is also pursuing alternative payments technology such as sound-based mobile payments, which are used in some taxis.
The company is also selling bundled payments services that include mobile point of sale, EMV, coupons, loyalty and analytics.
