InComm is adding add over 15,000 locations to its Vanilla Reload network, which allows prepaid card users to reload their general-purpose reloadable card accounts by swiping the card at the point of sale.
The direct swipe reload program reduces fraud risk by eliminating the need to use reload packs, which have lately been exploited by con artists. InComm plans to remove reload packs from all retail stores by March 31, 2015.
Under this type of fraud, scammers ask potential victims to pay some kind of fine or debt by purchasing a reload card, and then providing the code on the reload card to the fraudster. With the code, the scammers can obtain whatever amount of money the victim purchased on the reload card.
Green Dot, which operates its own reload network, is similarly working to phase out reload cards.
The Vanilla network today consists of 43,000 locations, InComm said.
