State Bank of India is issuing debit cards at its U.S. branches after joining First Data Corp.'s Star electronic funds transfer network, Amitabh Kumar, general manager of the bank's Alternate Channels and Payment Systems Group, writes in an e-mail message to ATM&Debit News, a CardLine Global sister publication. "In the U.S., we have joined the Star (transaction) switch, and the clients of our branches are being offered debit cards." Mumbai-based State Bank of India operates branches in New York, Chicago, Los Angeles and Washington, D.C. The bank, India's largest based on assets, also is considering issuing debit cards in the United Kingdom, Kumar says.
