A bank-owned payment organization in Hong Kong will use technology from Gemalto to help it create a Near Field Communications mobile payments service.
Joint Electronic Teller Services, or Jetco, plans a commercial rollout of mobile payments in Hong Kong and Macau through Gemalto's LinqUs Trusted Service Management software platform.
Jetco views the Gemalto technology as "a great advantage" because it will provide flexibility that banks need to leverage multiple payment standards, says John Tsang, deputy general manager with Jetco, in a Feb. 14 press release from Gemalto.
The technology will help Jetco securely distribute and manage mobile payment services, Amsterdam-based Gemalto says.
Users of the mobile payment system will be able to make low-value payments through a tap of their handsets at more than 10,000 point of sale terminals able to accept NFC payments, the company says.
Jetco services 30 member banks in Hong Kong and Macau and says it operates the largest ATM network in the region.
Gemalto will also operate as a consultant for Jetco during the rollout of the mobile payment services this year.
