Oberthur Technologies has started shipping stickers consumers can attach to mobile phones and other devices to make contactless payments, Martin Ferenczi, Americas region managing director for the Card Systems Division of the France-based vendor, tells CardLine sister publication CardLine Global. The vendor's FlyBuy sticker uses MasterCard Worldwide's PayPass contactless-payment application. Three banks in the United States and Europe, including a large U.S. issuer, have ordered the stickers, though Ferenczi declines to name the institutions. The vendor is shipping "tens of thousands" of the stickers, Ferenczi says, adding that at least one financial institution has sought pricing information for an order that could reach into the millions. The past few months have brought launches and partnerships that revolve around similar contactless stickers, including an effort involving Greenwood Village, Colo.-based processor First Data Corp. and France-based chip vendor Inside Contactless. Some observers have described the stickers as a bridge to Near Field Communication, a mobile-payment technology that has seen tests around the world but no large rollouts.
