Barwood Taxi, a Kensington, Md.-based cab company, has installed about 200 VeriFone devices that include video monitors and payment card readers in its taxis, VeriFone Holdings Inc. announced today. By year end, all 435 Barwood vehicles will have the VeriFone Transportation Systems devices, VeriFone says. San Jose, Calif.-based VeriFone says Barwood is the first taxi company to install the devices in the Washington, D.C., area. Besides enabling passengers to swipe their cards to pay for rides, the payment card reader also displays entertainment and advertising on its monitor. Barwood plans to introduce paid advertising on the devices by the end of the year, VeriFone says. Barwood vehicles carry approximately 210,000 passengers per month. Approximately 80 companies comprising about 10,000 vehicles use VeriFone's in-vehicle payment devices, a VeriFone spokesperson tells CardLine sister publication ISO&Agent Weekly. Riders make approximately 120,000 transactions with the devices daily, VeriFone says. The device's average transaction-processing time is two seconds.
