MasterCard is taking Apple Pay to one of the most popular locations on the professional golf tour.
The 16th hole at the Waste Management Phoenix Open PGA tour event at TPC Scottsdale has become golf legend because it is the only time on the tour in which fans cheer and jeer each tee shot as if at football game.
It is one of the most crowded holes of the season, as fans congregate to participate in a golf rarity.
Food and beverage concession stands at the 16th hole will have contactless payment readers to accept Near Field Communication payments through Apple Pay on the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, MasterCard said in a Jan. 26 press release. MasterCard is the official payment card for the tournament, which starts Jan. 29.
The card brand plans to support contactless payments at other PGA Tour events.
"The tournament experience lends itself well to simple, secure payments so fans get through concessions and back to the tournament quickly," said Matt Barr, group head of U.S. emerging payments for MasterCard, in the release.
MasterCard is working with partner Prom Management Group, which provides catering to 38 professional golf tours, to deploy the Apple Pay point-of-sale readers at concession stands.
