Mastercard this fall will launch a pilot in Poland enabling small businesses to accept contactless payments via smartphones.

Working with Elavon, Mobeewave and Polski ePłatności, Mastercard is developing specific security protocols so that merchants may accept payments of up to PLN50 (US$14) using a smartphone with no dongle, according to a press release.
Poland has a high penetration of contactless cards, but in a study the Polish Foundation for Development of Cashless Payments conducted, it found that many small merchants abandon mobile payments because of associated costs, the release said.

“Innovations such as this can help streamline processes, increase service availability and reduce time and costs, benefiting small merchants and customers,” said Rafał Gołębiewski, Elavon’s country manager for Poland, in the release.
