Former Citigroup payments executive Raja Rajamannar will be the new chief marketing officer at MasterCard, effective September 9.
Rajamannar will be responsible for MasterCard's advertising, sponsorships, promotions, research, insights and digital and consumer marketing initiatives. He will take over for Alfredo Gangotena, who is scheduled to retire on September 1.
Most recently, Rajamannar was executive vice president and chief transformation officer at WellPoint. In that role, he was responsible for managing the company's $10 billion Medicare Advantage business. He also managed marketing, data analytics, digital operations and other functions at WellPoint. Rajamannar was also as chief innovation and marketing officer for Humana.
Earlier, Rajamannar spent 15 years at Citigroup holding a number of roles, including global chief marketing officer for cards and payments. Rajamannar also served as chairman and CEO of Diners Club North America and was head of credit cards for Citi's Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) region.
"Raja's extensive background in the payments industry, his proven global marketing expertise, and his rich international experience make him the ideal person to continue to drive our brand's growth and momentum," says Gary Flood, president of global products and solutions for MasterCard, in an Aug. 27 press release.
