Consumers in the United Kingdom soon will be able to reload their prepaid MasterCards at more than 18,000 retail outlets operated by Payzone PLC under a deal announced Tuesday. The deal between the Irish firm and Ukash comes after an earlier agreement in which Ukash enables consumers to reload their prepaid cards under MasterCard's "rePower" program (CardLine Global, 17 June). Altair Financial Services International PLC, a UK-based payments processor and a prepaid card provider, also is taking part in the "rePower" scheme (CardLine Global, 10 July 2008). "The finer details of this solution are currently being finalized before the service is made available to customers during [the fourth quarter]," a Ukash spokesperson tells CardLine Global, declining to provides details about the costs to merchants and consumers to participate. The MasterCard program is designed so consumers can load funds into prepaid accounts accessed with MasterCard- and Maestro-branded cards at European point-of-sale locations. UK-based Ukash, which says it is helping to launch the service, plans to introduce it in the UK before offering it in other parts of Europe.
