MasterCard Worldwide and Univision Communications Inc. today officially launched a cobranded gift card. Last month, the two companies announced a strategic partnership that involves the cobranded gift card and a general-purpose prepaid card. The general-purpose card is scheduled to launch in 2010. MasterCard wanted to launch the gift card in time for the holiday shopping season, according to a company spokesperson. Consumers can purchase the card at Univision's Web site for $3.95. Shipping is free. The card is available in four designs, and denominations range from $20 and $500. Univision's brand awareness with the U.S. Hispanic population is the primary reason MasterCard partnered with the media giant, Laura Kelly, MasterCard senior vice president of global prepaid solutions, told CardLine sister publication ATM&Debit News last month (CardLine, 11/9). "Based upon Univision's mission to empower, inform and entertain the Hispanic community, they recognize, better than anyone, the importance of empowering Hispanics in their daily lives," Kelly said. The Bancorp Bank, a subsidiary of The Bancorp Inc., issues the gift cards. TxVia Inc. processes the transactions.
