MasterCard processing subsidiary DataCash will integrate with TV App Agency’s TV App Engine to enable electronics makers and app developers to accept payments through specially equipped televisions.

TV App Engine is a single platform that can work with different television brands, including Samsung, LG, Phillips, Sony, Panasonic and OperaTV. These companies sell smart TVs, which have Internet capabilities.

The integrated DataCash payment gateway and TV App Engine will allow electronics brands and developers to accept different payment types and process transactions in multiple currencies within their apps. This will enable consumers to make purchases via their televisions, or subscribe to certain media providers. The integration can also work video game consoles such as the upcoming Sony PlayStation 4 and Microsoft Xbox. 

“Given the amount that brands are investing in the development of Smart TV apps, this is a great step in helping them maximize their return on investment and potentially identify new ways to capitalize on the smart TV opportunity,” says Bruno Pereira, director and founder of TV App Agency, in a Sept. 9 press release.

Ingenico chairman and CEO Philippe Lazare has also spoken of the potential of televisions as a payments portal, saying his company’s technology can someday be embedded into computer chips installed on TVs, enabling viewers to load payment cards and access accounts with a device such as an Near Field Communication-enabled remote control.
