Lakeland, Fla.-based MidFlorida Credit Union is re-issuing approximately 12,000 debit cards following fraud attempts linked to the earlier data breach at Heartland Payment Systems in January of 2009.
In that breach, data related to more than 100 million credit and debit cards potentially was compromised. MidFlorida reported that it had issued 5,000 new cards during 2009, in addition to the most recent reissuance of cards. Overall, the CU has approximately 80,000 debit card holders.
Last month the hacker responsible for the data breach at Heartland Payment Systems, Albert Gonzalez, was sentenced to 20 years in prison and given a $25,000 fine.
