NCR Corp. has introduced ATM software that will allow consumers to withdraw cash using their smartphones, the Duluth, Ga.-based vendor announced June 11.

Consumers may use embedded functionality to scan a 2D barcode on their phone on any participating ATM’s home screen, and the prestaged cash transaction will be authorized and funds dispensed.

“NCR Mobile Cash Withdrawal will help financial institutions meet their customers’ expectations in the mobile channel and help them deliver a differentiated and faster converged-channel experience,” Michael O’Laughlin, senior vice president, NCR Financial Services, said in a press release.

The service requires no additional ATM hardware such as barcode scanners or Near Field Communication readers. It can be deployed with just a software upgrade.

No consumer data are stored on the device or contained within the on-screen 2D barcode. Instead, scanning the barcode only identifies the location of the ATM and prompts fulfillment of the transaction. In turn, using a mobile device eliminates the threat of ATM skimming devices used by criminals.
