NCR Corp. has installed what it calls the first-ever automated teller machine in Somalia.
Salaam Somali Bank worked with NCR channel partner DIS-PRO on the purchase and installation of the machine in the East African country's capital, Mogadishu. The ATM is located at the Jazeera Palace Hotel and allows consumers to withdraw only U.S. dollars from their foreign accounts.
"The installation serves as a sign of hope for the city as businesses and industries increase their investment in the region," said Mohamed Ali, a spokesman at Salaam Somali Bank, in a Dec. 9 news release.
The bank expects to add more machines throughout the downtown part of the city, the release said. Additionally, the bank is considering letting consumers take out money in other currencies.
Duluth, Ga.-based NCR has deployed ATMs in Antarctica, on the top of a mountain in China, and in Buckingham Palace.
