The Nebraska State Treasurer's office has partnered with PayNearMe to allow residents who prefer cash a way to make online payments.
PayNearMe allows consumers to take cash to one of its partner merchants, such as 7-Eleven, Family Dollar and ACE Cash Express, to pay bills and for goods remotely by also presenting a bar code on a payment slip or mobile phone screen. After the cash is delivered, PayNearMe notifies the intended recipient.
The new service is provided by the Nebraska Child Support Payment Center, a division of the treasurer's office.
"The addition of this new electronic cash payment option is part of our ongoing effort to improve efficiency and make the child support payment system easier for all," says Don Stenberg, Nebraska State Treasurer, in a May 27 press release. "This new system not only makes cash payments more convenient for parents, it also reduces our administrative costs."
There are 50 payment locations in Nebraska and along Nebraska's border in neighboring states. Nationwide, PayNearMe accepts payments at more than 17,000 locations.
"While 85% of the payments made to the Nebraska Child Support Payment Center are made by employers on behalf of their employees, a significant number of non-custodial parents still pay on their own and have no other choice than cash or money orders because their past financial histories prevent them from securing checking accounts, debit cards or credit cards," the press release says.
Before partnering with PayNearMe, Nebraska's only options for cash payment were money orders and the walk-up customer service window at a payment center.
PayNearMe charges a $3.99 fee per transaction.
