CreditCall and ChipCap PLC separately announced new readers that handle chip-and-PIN payments from cards that use the EMV standard.
CreditCall's system, called CardEase Mobile, allows smartphones and tablets to accept chip-and-PIN payments in the UK. It offers the reader through Elavon and Sage Pay. The system uses a PIN pad that connects to the mobile device using Bluetooth.
"This kind of solution enables that acceptance while preserving the familiar experience of Chip and PIN and all the security benefits that it provides," said Valerie Dias, executive vice president and chief risk and compliance officer for Visa Europe, in a press release Aug. 20. Visa Europe is separate from Visa Inc.
ChipCap's reader uses a hardware authentication token and a secure flash drive to better protect card payments.
"We provide heightened security without the cumbersome user experience faced by online banking customers today," said Christian Warhuus, chief technology officer and founder of ChipCap, in a separate press release Aug. 20. "Our reader will work with both a laptop computer and a smartphone. We know the mobile channel is particularly vulnerable to fraud and that we are just seeing the tip of the iceberg."
