Alioth, which sells government and payment cards in Russia, is teaming with NXP Semiconductors to launch a multi-functional card that combines payments with a range of other uses.
Called SCOne, users can access banking, ticketing, payments and government identification from the same card. These applications are enabled by NXP’s microcontrollers, and ALIOTH will offer smartcards that can be used to shop and make purchase.
The new secure multi-application card from ALIOTH and NXP with the MasterCard M/Chip PayPass application is ready for mass production now. Cards with a Visa PayWave application will be available later in 2013.
The availability of this new card follows the recent announcement that the Moscow Department of Transport has selected NXP’s technology for its "TROIKA" smart card project. The project includes a multi-modal card that allows customers to use one card for ticketing across multiple transport types. The Russian city of St. Petersburg is also using the technology for its public transport system.
Mass transit payments tech is also advancing in London.
