New York’s city council recently voted to allow campaign contributions to be made by text message.

The legislation enables residents to use their mobile phones to donate up to $99 for each candidate in an election cycle for municipal campaigns. Donors can give a total of $4,950 for each election. The donations can also be matched by the city’s Campaign Finance Board.

Mobile fundraising for political campaigns was first used in the 2012 presidential race, and political fundraising has recently expanded into virtual currencies.

Mobile fundraising has also been used to raise money after disasters such as the recent tornados in Oklahoma City and Hurricane Sandy in 2012.
