Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine's office sued collection agency Royal Oak Financial Services, doing business as Collection & Recovery Bureau, for allegedly using collection tactics banned by federal law and attempting to pursue debts that have not been verified.

The suit, filed in Lucas County (Ohio) Common Pleas Court on Thursday, alleges that the Sylvania, Ohio-based firm tried to collect debts that are not owed or verified, attempted to collect by sending letters lacking any relevant information and/or has used threatening phone calls to intimidate consumers - violations of the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act and Consumer Sales Practices Act.

The lawsuit seeks fines and fees in excess of $25,000. Collection & Recovery Bureau officials could not be reached for comment.
