A payments gateway offering multiple functions and customization options has become available in recent weeks to independent sales organizations and agents.

Until December, Warsaw, Ind.-based PayLeap USA had been offering its gateway primarily to software developers who wanted to integrate payments into website point-of-sale systems, says Daryn Barney, PayLeap vice president, business development. It decided to extend the offer to ISOs and agents to drive more business to the gateway.

The company developed the system in-house, began using it in 2010 and performs all of its support work, according to Rod Katzfey, PayLeap chief operations officer.

The gateway comes with features usually available only at extra cost, including tokenization, recurring billing and electronic check processing, says Barney.

ISOs and agents may cobrand the gateway’s Web pages, embellish them with their logo and wrap them in their company colors, Barney points out. The site can bear the ISOs name on the shopping cart and the words “Powered by PayLeap,” he says.

“An ISO or agent can brand it as their own,” notes Katzfey.

Merchants also reduce their responsibility for complying with Payment Card Industry data security standards when they use the gateway because PayLeap takes on much of that responsibility, Barney says.

Developers have used the gateway in about 75 online POS systems, Katzfey says.

PayLeap cannot easily estimate the number of uses, however, because developers can come to the PayLeap site, download the code for free and use it more than once, he says.

Providing the information without charge makes sense because having the gateway on more sites drives more business, says Barney.

PayLeap charges ISOs $5 per month for the gateway and 4 cents per transaction, and the organizations may mark up both when they offer the service to merchants, Katzfey says. Competing companies typically charge $15 to $75 per month, plus 5 cents to 75 cents per transaction, he maintains.
