Planet Payment will allow electronic commerce merchants in the U.S. and Canada to accept UnionPay cards, one of the largest card brands in the world, with more than 3.5 billion cards issued internationally.

Merchants can also participate in UPOP, UnionPay's program to authenticate and process UnionPay cards online.

Planet Payment, an international and multi-currency processor, integrated the UPOP into iPay, Planet Payment's payment gateway.

Planet Payment will also add UPOP to its Shop in Your Currency service, allowing Chinese consumers to view pricing while paying in China's renminbi while the merchant receives funds in U.S. or Canadian dollars.

To provide security, UPOP includes an SMS-based authentication system—when a cardholder enters his or her card details in the payment page, UnionPay sends a PIN code to the user's mobile device that is registered to the UnionPay card. The cardholder is them prompted to enter this PIN to complete the transaction.

International Checkout, a third-party payment and fulfillment service for U.S. retailers that sell internationally online, is the first company to launch UPOP in the U.S. International Checkout's clients include bebe, Andrew Marc, Alice+Olivia and Joie.

Planet Payment also recently partnered with Visa to expand services in emerging markets.
