The Rhode Island Department of Labor and Training has joined the Treasury Offset Program, to collect delinquent unemployment insurance overpayments directly from an individual’s federal income tax refund.

Federal agents, under the program, will compare tax refund payment records with records of debts submitted by states. When there's a match, the Bureau of Fiscal Service will reduce the amount of any awarded federal income tax refund payment to satisfy the debt owed to the state.

Rhode Island joins 37 other states and the District of Columbia in participating in the program.
